Alcoholism and Homeopathic treatment of Alcoholism

What is alcoholism?

The term alcoholism is a confusing one and this is replaced by the current nomenclature “alcohol dependency”. Drinking habit is gradually increasing in our society. This is the price one should pay for living in a complex modern society. It become a Problem when-

1.changes appear in the body.
2.Symptoms develop for which medical aid is necessary. Or
3.When symptoms develop due to abstinence.

The following are some of the feature of alcohol abuse.

1.It is believed that drinking upto 20 units of alcohol for men and 13 units for women per week is not associated with healthy hazard.

2.It definitely occurs when consumption of alcohol is more than 50 units for men and 35 units for women in a week.

Types of Alcoholism:

1.Acute Alcoholism- Tolerance to alcohol from person to person. Early symptoms include euphoria and talkativeness. Latter on concentration is impaired and the subject becomes forgetful.

2. Alcoholic Coma- Coma may rarely develop after alcoholic intoxication. The features are similar to those of Insulin Coma.3. Acute Alcoholic Hallucinosis- This rare condition developed after heavy drinking or on withdrawal. Patient hears hallucinatory voice of threatening. Patient remains in a fearful mood.

4.Chronic Alcoholic Hallucinosis- This rare condition may develop from acute hallucinosis or may develop as such. Rhythmical, repetitive hallucinatory voice may be heard.5.Chronic Alcoholic Brain Syndrome

6.Chronic Alcoholism- It is the result of persistent imbibitions to alcohol for a long time. Due to this tolerance limit is increased. In the premonitory phase irritability and deterioration of personality are seen. Lack of intelligence and concentration develop and the patient tells a lie deliberately. Gradually depression and excitements are seen. The patient becomes a permanent liar. Dementia develops. Epileptic convulsion and delirium tremens may also develop from time to time.

7.Foetal alcohol Syndrome- In women taking alcohol regularly the following changes are seen in the offspring:

a. Low birth weight
b. Mental retardation with I. Q of about 60.
c. Developmental anomalies particularly of heart and face.
-There is commonly breech presentation. Delayed post natal growth and anomalies of behavior are seen.

8.Alcohol Withdrawal Syndrome-

The following features are seen

a.Delirium Tremens.
b.Tremor.
c.Insomnia
d.Marked agitation.
e.Convulsion.
f. Excitability
g. Anxiety.
h. Depression.
i. Fatigue.

Homeopathic Treatment of Alcoholism:

Nux vomica

Nux is the great anti-alcoholic remedy. It corresponds to the tremor, to the nervous affection, to the headache, to the bad taste. It also corresponds to delirium tremens, where every little noise frightens and the victim finds no rest any place, springs up at night and has frightful visions. The tremor is marked with ugliness and irritability and gastric disturbance. It is the remedy for the acute results of a spree; the morning big head is often large enough for the Nux cap, and the “rich brown" taste corresponds beautifully. It is a remedy to be given while the patient is still under the influence of liquor or any of the stages of alcoholism. Agaricus will sometimes control the characteristic tremor when Nux fails.
Opium

This is a remedy indicated in "old sinners" who have had the delirium tremens over and over again. There is a constant expression of fright or terror, they have visions of animals springing up everywhere, they see ghosts, the sleep is uneasy, and the breathing is stertorous. It is especially indicated in those cases simulating apoplexy.Lachesis has visions of snakes and hideous objects. It has a choking sensation in throat which awakens suddenly from sleep. Stramonium is suitable in habitual drunkards. The prevailing mental characteristic is terror, all hallucinations and illusions are fright and terror producing. It has visions of animals coming at him from every corner and he tries to escape. The face of Stramonium is bright red, not dark red as in Opium. Arsenic has visions of ghosts, with great weakness; diseases from overuse of alcohol; patients must have their accustomed drinks; great tremulousness and nervous weakness. Suicidal tendency constantly annoyed by bugs and vermin that he sees upon his person and unceasingly tries to brush them off. Belladonna, too has delirium with visions of rats, mice, etc., and so has Calcarea carbonica.Belladonna is easily distinguished from Opium, and Calcarea comes in as a last resort after Belladonna and Stramonium have ceased to do good. Aconite also has worked well in the acute mania of delirium tremens where the prevailing attitude is fear. Fears darkness, ghosts, with the same desire to escape found under Belladonna. Ranunculus bulbous given in the tincture has been found to be most calming in attacks of delirium tremens. It is undoubtedly one of our best remedies in the treatment of acute alcoholism. The writer has prescribed this remedy with good results. Phosphorus sees faces peering at him from all parts of the room. Cimicifuga is useful in cases that are mentally depressed and tremor is a prominent symptom. The delirium is mild and the hallucinations of sight relate to small objects; there is persistent sleeplessness and physical restlessness. Avena sativa is a valuable remedy in alcoholism where the victim is nervous and sleepless almost to the point of delirium tremens. It is also a useful remedy in the opium and cocaine habits. Strophanthus has also been successfully used.

Sulphuric acid

This is the remedy for chronic alcoholism. It corresponds to inebriates on their last, who are pale and shriveled and cold, whose stomach will not tolerate the slightest amount of food. They cannot drink water unless it is well whisked. They area quick and hasty in everything, and have a great and constant craving for brandy. It comes in long after Nux vomica, perhaps after Kelly and other cures have failed over and over again. It suits the sour breath and vomiting of alcoholic dyspepsia. It may be given low. "Should it produce a diarrhea Pulsatilla is the proper antidote." (Dr. Luther Peck.) The constant craving for brandy reminds one of Sulphur, Nux vomica and Arsenicum, all of which have craving for spirituous liquors. Tartar emetic may be useful when mucous gastric derangement predominates as after beer, with tendency to pneumonia, and accompanied by cool sweat. Capsicum in ten drop doses of the tincture will stop the morning vomiting, sinking at the pit of the stomach and intense craving for alcohol in dipsomania, and promote the appetite. It reduces the agitation and tremor and induces calm sleep. Delirium tremens will often be speedily relieved by Capsicum. Cantharis. Continual attempts to bite; sexual excitement; face pale, yellow, dysuria. Spiritus glandium quercus. Burnett recommended this remedy as an antidote to the affects of alcohol, and Dr.A.F.Schulz, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, reported to the writer that in his opinion it will frequently cause disgust for alcoholic beverages. He has had success from its use.

Cannabis Indica

A very reliable remedy in acute alcoholism. Some violence, talkativeness and active mind; subjects crowd upon it, delusions and hallucination relate to exaggerated subjects time, space, etc.; face flushed, pupils dilated, perspires easily. Surprise is constantly expressed on the countenance.

Hyoscyamus

When delirium tremens occurs this is usually one of the first remedies indicated. The delirium is constant and loquacious, rarely inflammatory enough for Belladonna or maniacal enough for Stramonium; the pulse is small and quick and compressible, the skin is cold and clammy, the patient is tremulous and picks constantly at objects in the air. Marked sexual excitement, desire to expose person and fear of poison. The vision is those of persecution, are\terrifying, and the patient makes efforts to escape. Constant insomnia is an excellent indication; outburst of laughter alerting with weeping may also occur. Dr.Butler says that for the production of sleep no remedy compares with Hyoscyamus in the tincture, five or ten drops in a half glass of water, and teaspoonful doses given half-hourly.

Note: Do not use these Drug directly, without doctor consultation.

Ischemic Heart Disease

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is typically defined as a >50% stenosis of any epi cardial coronary artery. It is most commonly due to obstruction by atheromatous plaque.

Epidemiology:

AD is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Western society and caused one of every five deaths in the United States in 2002.

The morbidity associated with CAD is considerable: More than 1 million patients have a myocardial infarction (MI) annually. Many more are hospitalized for unstable angina and evaluation and treatment of stable chest pain syndromes.

About 90% of patients with CAD have prior exposure to at least one major risk factor (see Risk Factor) Blood Vessels
Pathophysiology:

The manifestations of CAD include stable angina, acute coronary syndromes (ACS), congestive heart failure, sudden cardiac death, and silent ischemia.

ACS encompasses a spectrum of clinical conditions from unstable angina to ST-elevation MI.
Stable angina most often results from fixed coronary lesions that produce a mismatch of myocardial supply and demand with increasing cardiac workload.

The presence of ischemic heart disease can predispose patients to additional problems, including heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death.

Diagnosis

Clinical Presentation

A careful history and physical examination are usually sufficient to provide information to establish an appropriate pretest probability of coronary disease.

Characteristics of angina:

Angina is usually described as a chest discomfort or heaviness that may radiate to the neck, jaw, or arm(s) and can be further defined as follows.

1.Typical angina (definite) is (a) substernal chest discomfort with a characteristic quality and duration that is (b) precipitated by stress and (c) relieved by rest or nitroglycerin (NTG).

2.Atypical angina (probable) meets two of these characteristics.

3.Noncardiac chest pain meets one or none of these characteristics.

Grading
of angina:

Grading of angina is based on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Classification System.

Class I: Angina occurs only with strenuous activity.
Class II: Angina occurs with moderate activity like walking more than two blocks or climbing more than one flight of stairs.
Class III: Angina occurs with mild activity like climbing a flight of stairs or walking less than two blocks.
Class IV: Angina occurs with any activity and may occur at rest.

Associated symptoms may include dyspnea, diaphoresis, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or palpitations. The patient's complaints may also be atypical in nature, such as epigastric discomfort.

Risk Factors
:

Tobacco
Hypertension
Diabetes mellitus
Dyslipidemia
Family history
Obesity

Investigation:

Electrocardiogram (ECG).
Biochemical markers
Chest radiograph.

Homeopathic Treatment:

-Amyl nitrite
-Glonoine
-Crataegus
-Cimicifuga

Homeopathic Treatment of AIDS

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

What is AIDS?

It is serious and fatal disease characterized by widespread damage to the immune system of the body with susceptibility to usual cancers and severe infection caused by human retrovirus. The Virus called HIV or H+ IV-I (formerly known as HLTV-III or LAV).

Aetiology:

In 1981, the Task force Atlanta Georgia front reported this disease and coined the name AIDS. It has been reported from all countries organism belong to the immunodeficiency virus which is grouped to human retroviruses HIV or HIV-I. These virus have one unique enzyme called reverse transcriptase which is RNA Directed DNA polymerase and which replicate within the host cells.

The Disease spreads by-

(a) Close sexual contact and by passive anal intercourse,
(b) Parenteral transmission through blood and plasma product,
(c) Transplacental , from pregnant mother to the baby,
(d) Milk of breast feeding mother ,
(e) Saliva
(f) Tears

Incubation Period:

It’s varies from 6 month to 6 years average being 2.5 years.

Pathogenesis

Immunodeficiency is the hall mark of HIV infection. Those cells which express T4 (CD4) antigen act as receptas of HIV and hence they are affected. After entering the cell the virus replicates causing cell fusion or death of the cell by unknown mechanism.

Homeopathic Medicine for Pimple or Acne

Acne or Pimples:
It is an inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands (the oil-secreting glands) and the hair follicles. It is characterized by whiteheads, blackheads and pustules. Scarring is common and is usually associated with an oily discharge.

Cause

The cause is not fully understood, but the probable causes can be:
1.Heredity
2.Hormonal imbalance esp. during puberty
3.Hygiene
4.Improper diet
5.Stress
6.Drugs like corticosteroids

Do & Do not

-Wash your face frequently, at least 5 times a day, taking care that it does not become too dry.
-Do not scrub your face while washing because scrubbing on inflamed skin aggravates the acne.
-Use a gentle cleanser made of natural ingredients or herbs rather than chemical preparations.
-Do not use scented soaps and use a mild anti-bacterial soap if possible.
-Try not to apply cosmetics regularly or use non-greasy light make-up of repute.
-Do not sleep with your make-up on.
-Do not overexpose your skin to the sun. Preferably wear a hat while going out.
-Do not break your pimples else it will lead to secondary infection.
-You can use facial steam to reduce inflammation and infection but never more than 15 minutes and not more than once a fortnight.
-Diet should be rich in natural whole foods like whole grain cereals, fresh fruit salads and vegetables raw or lightly cooked. Avoid fatty food, chocolate, ice cream, butter, cakes, white bread, sweets and fried food.
-Supplements of vitamin A and Zinc may be used.
-Regular exercise will make your circulation better.

See a doctor if,
Your acne does not respond in 2-3 months following the advice listed above.
If your acne is infected and there is pus like discharge.
If you are not sure if it is acne or any other skin eruption.

Homeopathic Treatment:

Sulphur:

Is perhaps the remedy most often indicated in this affection, especially if chronic? The skin is rough and hard and the acne is associated with comedones and constipation; great aggravation from water is the characteristic leading to Sulphur in skin affections. The acne punctata is the variety corresponding most nearly to Sulphur. Simple forms yield to Belladonna or Pulsatilla. Acne rosacea yields to Arsenicum iodatum or Sulphur iodide.

Sanguinaria:
Is another useful remedy in acne, especially in women with scanty menses and irregular circulation of blood. Other remedies for acne dependent on sexual disturbances of women are Calcarea carbonica and Aurum muriaticum natronatrum.

Kali bromatum:
Produces acne on the face, neck and shoulders. We frequently find acne in Epileptics who have been maltreated by bromides. This remedy is especially adapted to the acne simplex and the acne indurate, especially in hyperaesthetic, nervous females, and the late Dr. Martin Deschere loudly praised it. Since Kali bromatum has been found a useful remedy in sexual excesses it will be especially a remedy in acne due to that cause. Dr. J.H.Clarke says, "I know of no remedy of such universal usefulness in cases of simple acne as Kali bromatum 30," and the late Dr.A.M. Cushing recommended Arsenicum bromatum 4x as very efficacious. Thuja is one of our best remedies for acne facialis. Calcarea picrata is also a useful remedy for acne; clinically it has been found one of the good remedies. Calcarea sulphurica is indicated where the pimples suppurate.

Antimonium crudum:
Small red pimples on face, acne in drunkards with gastric derangements, thirst and white-coated tongue. Antimonium tartaricum. Obstinate cases, with tendency to postulation, are curable with this remedy. Berberis aquifolium is useful where the skin is rough and the acne persistent. Natrum muriaticum acts especially on the sebaceous glands, and is a very helpful remedy in acne. In this affection attention must be directed especially to the patient's type, temperament and tendencies and the general symptoms are far mores important than the local ones.
